Control Black Henbane Organically

Step 1. Correctly identify your plant

  • This plant is a member of the nightshade family, plant can grows up to six feet tall. Unpleasant odor at all growth stages.

  • Leaves are large and alternate with toothed and lobed margins. They are covered in short hairs, grayish-green in color with a white mid-vein.

  • Flowers are five lobed and funnel-shaped. They are off white with deep purple centers.

Step 2. Choose your method.

  • All parts of Black Henbane are poisonous to humans and livestock and some experience skin irritation, caution is required when managing this plant.

  • Hand pull or dig removing at least 2-4” of root.

  • If there are large patches of bare ground, we recommend seeding natives to prevent reinvasion of noxious weeds.

Step 3. Repeat.

Treatment should be repeated throughout the season and monitoring is required for several consecutive growing seasons as the seeds are still viable in the soil for a period of five years.
